Battery Backup Solution Information

Backup Power Information

As a broadband customer, your voice service has power limitations. This notice outlines these limitations and your opportunity to purchase power backup if you are not comfortable with the limitations.

What are the power limitations?

If your home phone service is provided with our state-of-the-art fiber optic or fixed wireless network, it requires electric power to operate your voice service and will not operate during a power outage.  To avoid a disruption of home voice service during a power outage – and to maintain the ability to connect to 911 emergency services or any other calls from your home phone – you will need battery backup.

Where to Obtain Your Battery Backup

If you have not purchased a battery backup for your service already, we offer an optional battery backup available for purchase directly from Peoples. If you have any questions or want to purchase a battery backup, please call 1-800-333-9779 or visit our business office. Our 24-hour battery backup costs approximately $300.00 for a fiber optic connection or $3,000.00 for a fixed wireless connection and includes professional installation by a Peoples technician. Replacement batteries are also available and cost approximately $150.00 for a fiber optic connection or $2,200.00 for a fixed wireless connection. These replacement batteries can be shipped directly to your home or be picked up at our business office. Battery installation is easy, and steps can be found online below. If you do not feel comfortable installing your own replacement battery, we would be happy to assist you. Please note, however, that there will be a charge for installation.

If purchasing your battery backup from Peoples, we can guarantee that the battery will be compatible with your equipment and we will provide helpful information about self-monitoring and self-testing the battery backup. We will also provide any applicable warranty information.

If you would prefer to purchase a battery backup from a retailer, please contact our office to identify the equipment at your location to ensure you are purchasing a compatible device.

What Your Battery Backup Can – and Can’t – Do for You

Our backup batteries are expected to last at least 24-hours on standby power. This backup battery is not intended to provide power to any services other than voice. Home security systems, medical monitoring devices, routers, and other equipment should not be run on a home phone battery backup.

Instructions for Proper Care and Use of Your Battery

Please follow the more detailed instructions included with your battery for proper use, storage and care of your battery to ensure that it will function as needed during a power outage. Environmental factors such as temperature can shorten your battery’s useful life. The recommended temperature range for the batteries is above 41°F and below 104°F. These batteries are rechargeable. They will not last forever and should be replaced every 1 to 2 years. See the instructions above for purchase and replacement options. Periodically, you should remove and test your battery, (as described in the instructions included with your battery).
